If you had the power of concentration whenever you wanted it, imagine how much more productive you could be. Well, Kool and the Gang called and they want their song back. Not only can learn how to concentrate better, but you can do so right now.
Concentration Power Is Automatic
Once you start on a certain task, concentration commences, but screeches to a stop upon distraction. The usual distraction would come from our own mind, and these are our thoughts, or should I say, train of thought that is often near impossible to derail. If only it was so easy to do away with the interference and achieve a state of complete concentration. Is there a way that these distractions can be eradicated, that our mental swoons can be controlled?
Ladies and gents, read on. Your mind is wandering all right, but what is the cause of the wandering? Suss it out – do you need to make an urgent phone call, or are you subconsciously thinking of a festering regret or problem that may eventually snowball on you? You could be worried about an upcoming meeting, or a family matter. Start tuning into your mind today, and it will become easier by tomorrow.
You will then want to create a diversion of sorts for these external factors, so you don’t have to think of them all the time. Make that phone call, or make a note about it, and your mind will usually let go of the concern for now. Sometimes you really need to find the right salve for that “mind irritation” of yours. Self-talk is a useful tool – try something like “the earliest you can get this taken care of would be in a fortnight from now, so get a hold of yourself, mate!”
This is a simple process you can do a few times as needed, and sooner or later you will discover what actually bubbles beneath the surface, making you tune out and lose focus and concentration. Find the salve for your mind irritation, as we said, and you’ll be on your way to thinking more clearly.
Much Ado About Concentration?
Self-talk can be helpful, as we said, and it can also be practised by asking yourself one serious question – why do I want to concentrate? If you’re feeling bored, concentration can be quite challenging. With that being said, it would be up to you to stave off boredom and honestly ask yourself why concentration matters so much. It won’t be long before your ability to focus your mind improves as you would now clearly see the advantages of putting your mind squarely on the task at hand.
Obvious Distractions
Recently-retired Major League Baseball pitcher David “Boomer” Wells used to warm up with heavy metal legends Metallica blaring from his boom box. But really, what is distracting for John may happen to motivate Peter or Sue, or do either of the two for you. Do something about whatever it is that takes your mind away from the task at hand. Turn off the TV, feed your empty stomach, or turn your desk away from the window.
When you take care of the external and the internal distractions, you’ll be able to focus your attention and brain power like a spotlight. Watch a child building a sand castle sometime, and you’ll see that the power of concentration really is natural.
